The purpose of this EU Horizon project is to reduce Europe’s textile waste problem and its associated environmental impacts. In the TexMat project, the partners jointly develop new business models, technologies, and operational practices that increase the reuse of textiles and engage consumers in the separate collection of textile waste.
The project develops and tests a new decentralized textile collection concept, in which automated collection units (so‑called TexMat smart containers) sort consumer‑delivered textiles into reusable textiles for second‑hand sellers, recyclable textiles for recycling operators, and textile waste for waste management.
In addition, the TexMat innovation supports the implementation of key elements of the EU Textile Strategy and the Circular Economy Regulation, including mandatory textile waste collection, the introduction of the Digital Product Passport (DPP), and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Consumers are offered financial incentives through return‑reward systems.
